Vowel “E,e”
This vowel does not really have a counterpart in English. So, lesson time again! I tell the children to imagine a little doggie is running along, you’re calling him and he jumps right into your belly. You made a “uhhh!” soud. That would be close to the “e” in French. Here are your words. Again, some of these are real words.

Dictée#4
Thursday, October 27th
Vowel: U,u
To make this sound I have a couple of tricks. (Be forewarned! This sound cannot be confused with the “Ooo, Ooo” sound of an owl!!) To make this very important sound you MUST lock your mouth into a tiny circle.
One way:
Imagine you have just witnessed a skunk spray and the smell is strong. You say: “Ewwww, that stinks!” Or in French you say: “Uuuuu, ca pu!”
Another way:
Open your mouth to a smile and say the letter “e”, in English. Now slowly bring your lips in to form a perfect, Tiny circle. All this time you are saying: ”e” (in English) as you bring your lips in it becomes the sound “u” in French. Voila! You are on your way! Now say these words (real words, by the way) in French!

THURSDAY, October 20th
Vowel: I,i
To make this sound you say the letter “e” of the English alphabet.
However, when I illustrate this to the children I tell them it is the sound some people make when they see a mouse. As in: “EeeK!”

3. gi (soft “g”, as in “girafe” en Francais) 8. fi
4. di 9. si
5. ti 10. bi
“d” and “t”: These two letters share the same sound productions as “v” and “f”. This time there the tongue touches the upper palette of the mouth. For the sound in “d”, place your hand on your throat and there is a vibration. For the sound of “t” there is no vibration, it is the breath that makes the sound.
